Gamble in Terror!
I don't think the word "terrorist" held any significance to our generation up until recently. You were the cop and I was the robber; you were the good guy and I was the bad guy; you were the Power Rangers and I was some guy in a horribly designed costume. But then on 9 September 2001, a devastating event forced the us to gaze into the eyes of an enemy we didn't even know existed. The enemy -- men and women who do not follow a country's flag or wear a uniform -- is formless and incorporeal. They have no body to strike, no head to remove.
Why did the world suddenly care? Why now and not before? Terrorism has certainly been around longer than America and there have been terrorist attacks even before 9/11. Could studying the origins of terrorism have prevented so much suffering? ... Probably not, but it might help us in to better understand the conditions that make terrorism so enticing to the average person.
